Sibutramin is a centrally acting inhibitor of reducing levels of serotonin and   noradrenaline. It is structurally similar to amphetamines, although the mechanism of action is different.

Sibutramine reduces the uptake of serotonin (by 53%), norepinephrine (by 54%), and dopamine (by 16%), which increases the levels of these substances in the synaptic cleft, and help to increase the feeling of satiety, and thus affect the appetite. Older anorectic agents such as amphetamine and fenfluramine caused the more an increase of the release of these neurotransmitters, than the effect on the uptake.
